Building model boat kits has been a popular hobby amongst boat enthusiasts for many years. You can recreate boats from any historical period you desire, and model boat kits are widely available in a variety of model scales. Before purchasing a model boat kit, there are 4 things you should consider when selecting the perfect kit for you:
1. Your budget: Depending on the complexity of the boat, kits can range in price from less than $100 to thousands of dollars. How much you are willing to spend is your first consideration before buying a model boat kit.
2. Your skill level: Are you an amateur or an expert model builder? Model boat kits range in skill level from 1 to 6 and is based on the intricacy and time involved in cutting, fitting and shaping the boat. Skill level 1 kits can be built without any prior building experience, whereas skills levels 4-6 are intended for experienced boat builders. Always choose a model boat kit that matches your expertise; otherwise you will become frustrated if the boat is too difficult to construct.
3. Time period: The history of sea travel offers a variety of boats to choose from and can buy a model boat kit for any time period in any style including historic sailboats, hovercraft, World War II boats, submarines, motor boats and more. Your interest in time period, country and the type of boat should dictate what you choose.
4. Quality: A good quality model boat kit is usually made of wood such as pine, mahogany, or basswood, is high gloss painted and is complete with rigging and sails. Some also come with motors so that they can self-propel through the water. Inexpensive model boat kits are usually made of plastic. The quality of the model boat kit will generally be reflected in the price. Always do your research and read what others are saying about a particular kit so you aren’t disappointed with the end result.
